Literature Text

They speak of 'Flanders Fields'
Of poppies, row on row
But, truthfully, how much of war
Do we really know?

Every year we bow our heads,
Place our hands on our hearts
We think of those who passed away
Through remembering, we do our part

But if you really look
You'll find it's not all glory
Take a look-see and hear about
A soldier's side of the story

They go in for the fame and fortune
Courage, they're only pretending
However, I'm sorry to say that
It's not always a happy ending

Some of them are victorious
Others, though, are not
Some have medals of valor
Others, their bravery forgot

They come out empty-handed,
After all the blood, sweat, and tears
They come out a different man
With nightmares, sadness and fears

Every year we wear a poppy
For a minute, we stand still
Indeed, on Remembrance Day,
Remember, we certainly will.
A poem I wrote for my school's remembrance day assembly, third draft. It ended up being a tad harsh, so they didn't use it, but anyway, here it is. :)
